It's a bittersweet image. It's a hug goodbye, a hug of thank you, a hug of true unconditional love. After 17 years, I lost my best friend. She had mouth cancer, it was terrible and it was getting worse, and that day... that day we knew it was her last. And we surrounded her with love and affection and attention. But this picture, the very last I have of us together, the pain and love on my face... it's striking. That chart at the vet's exam room, in the top right, had life expectancies for dogs and cats, and my dog was several years beyond it. She was, literally, off the charts. This is the vet's office at the shelter where we adopted her 17 years before. I think my sister and I made the vet assistant cry/emotional when she saw how much we loved and cared for Cookie in her final moments. This was a hard day. And that car ride home was the loneliest of my life. That night I kept wishing for time to fast forward because I wanted that day to be the past, I couldn't handle that day being "today" - and now, a year later, I still think of my pup and the joy she brought me through 17 of the wildest years of my life. I miss her so terribly, but I so very appreciate having had her in my life.BattleIII by Hallor
