jab number one.
pfizer shot #1 here in aotearoa. walked into the health clinic in oneroa to just gather information, thinking i probably wouldn’t be eligible until july, and BOOM, they asked if i could come in that afternoon.
the relief i feel cannot be described.
i want to say a quick word about the vaccine, because the number of people i’ve met in person here in new zelaand who are “anti-vax” has been troubling me deeply. i also can’t shake the comments from previous vaccine posts where people accuse me of “selling out to the very establishment against which i used to rail” and calling me a sheeple for promoting and celebrating a feat of science that is going to save millions of lives.
do i believe that every scientist knows every thing about this vaccine and every effect it will ever have in every human forever and ever? hell no. do i think that science has always aimed in the right direction – progress, love, safety – for most of human history?
do i believe that having faith in the science has always been exactly that: a leap of faith – from every prescription and over-the-counter medicine i’ve ever popped in my mouth or slathered on my body to every vial i’ve blood i’ve had taken at every routine physical to every x-ray machine i’ve had the pleasure to encounter?
yes. yes. yes.
having faith in the science is…my faith.
nobody expects perfection, but have we ever?
we are all always shooting in the planetary darkness, trying to do our best to protect ourselves, our kiddos, our friends, our entire human family.
the hardest thing for me to hear on this little island i live on – often from otherwise sage women in their 60s and 70s – is that they’re not going to get vaccinated because they “don’t plan on traveling”. i don’t think they understand that when the virus begins to course through new zealand – which it inevitably MUST when the borders open, whenever that may happen – it will not matter whether or not they are traveling.
the virus will travel to them.
the virus could kill them if they get it.
but they’ve “done the deep research” and mistrust the vaccine. it will alter their dna. it will give them cancers. it is made from the bones of children. it is embedded with bill gates’ microchip. oh my friends. i worry. if this post changes one persons thoughts, it was worth it. get vaccinated. not just for you, but for team human.
more soon – the althing should be ready for you in a few days. thank you for all the beautiful feedback about the lucy & neil video :
it’s going wild and being loved on youtube which makes me really happy, especially all the comments throwing love to the patrons who funded it (that’s you).
