HALLO LOVES!!! espeically y’all aucklanders!!!!
TL;DR .there are still tickets to morra hall, i’m having a picnic/walk/party for aucklanders at my house before the morra hall shows on saturday, and everything in the world generally feels crazy.
this poll/post is a quick headcount to see how many aucklanders are coming this saturday. it’ll change where and how we do things, so please RSVP! if there are 10 of you that’s one thing, if there are 100 that’s another. please answer this poll and also comment in this post with how many people you’re planning on bringing with you!!!
HI.
i drank a beer the other night at the flying nun 40th anniversary party at auckland’s town hall.
art? life? time? climate change? covid?
WHAT? no. it’s all an illusion.
i am spent from two weeks of chasing a kid around, but i am hoping to have enough time this week to finish writing a new song i’ve been working on for three fucking months. if i do, i’m gonna thing it as a raw demo. it’s time for music.
i am tired of not feeling like a songwriter. i don’t know if i’ll have enough time, so send me some songwriting prayers. i need them.
and if i finish it, i’ll be able to play it at the upcoming shows. also….WE ARE FILMING AND WILL BE THINGING MORRA HALL!!! so hooray. after the shows, give us about a week or two to work on the edit. i am so happy to be able to share this kind of tiny show with everybody out in the world.
if you’re not in auckland, you may wanna skip this first bit with all the weekend show and party info. or read it and spend some time yearning to be at a picnic in auckland with whoever shows up to ninja this weekend…..
after spending a few weeks in the deep south of this country and getting, as bill hicks would say. my third eye squeegee’d….i’m now back in auckland. neil and ash and i spent the better part of the weekend in the city, and actually spent some time exploring, stories and photos below…
but before i get to that, i need to give you the details for the shows this weekend and the PATRON-ONLY PARTY FOR WAIHEKEANS AND AUCKLANDERS.

AND, PITCH….
if you are an aucklander pondering….should i go to this strange island? what if i do not understand the ferry? what if i feel alone? what if i GET LOST ON THE ISLAND AND NEVER GET HOME AGAIN?.…let me re-assure you…..IT ISN’T THAT COMPLICATED!!!
the passenger ferry that runs from auckland to waiheke goes TO THE STREET WHERE THE VENUE IS!! it’s then about a 15 minute walk (or 3 minute bike ride, or 2 minute taxi, and there are cabs at the ferry) straight up the road to the venue. it is SUPER SIMPLE….i promise you won’t get lost!!! and i promise you won’t miss the last ferry back. there are ferries back to auckland at 11pm and 12:30pm…and the show will wrap by about 10:25pm. YOU WILL MAKE IT. I PROMISE.
here’s the path from the waiheke ferry terminal to the venue!! this is how close it is:
(fun fact: see that blue dot? that’s the cafe i am writing this post in 🙂
if you want some food/restaurant suggestions, i put some here!: https://www.patreon.com/posts/53662078
………..
as far as the PATRON ONLY PARTY….HERE WE GO….
it will be THIS SATURDAY, JULY 31st, BEFORE THE MORRA HALL SHOWS, from 11am-1pm!!
we will gather AT MY HOUSE (which is a 5 minute walk from morra hall!!), and if the rain is crazy, we will stay packed indoors at mine and cuddle and figure it out, but if we have okay weather, we will go for a walk on the beach and have a little picnic, so BRING A PICNIC BLANKET IF YOU CAN, and bring food, drinks and snacks to share!!!! BRING GUITARS! BRING UKULELII!!! BRING WHATEVER!!!
i will patron-only post you all the address of my house during the day on friday, or if there are simply too many people or the weather shifts, pivot to a different meeting point – right near the venue or the ferry – if we gotta.
let’s show this island how nice it is to be weird on the beach. i may swim!! bring a suit if you’re into the cold water!!! we’ll climb some trees and take a huge group picture and play some songs and have some goddamn fun. feel free to bring kiddos along!!!!
i will need to split around 1 for soundcheck but you guys can keep hanging out, split up, go eat, explore the island, go to the beautiful library….start drinking 🙂
PLEASE PLEASE ANSWER THE POLL AND COMMENT WITH HOW MANY PEOPLE YOU ARE BRINGING SO I CAN GET A HEADCOUNT!!!
…………..
here are some auckland-happy pictures from the weekend.
the flying nun 40th anniversary show at town hall was amazing, i put up a whole carousel of photos here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CRvFpoFlMp7…
this is my fave. mermaidens, playing the fuck out of their set:
and here’s a gorgeous couple of shots from yesterday.
it was last day of school holidays, i just dropped ash off at school again.
life feels like a dream lately. not sure what kind of dream. one where there is no obvious outcome. we spent much of it walking about the hot house wintergarden in the auckland domain and wandering around in the city.
we took ash ice-skating in aotea square.
i cried four times yesterday and i’m not PMSing. the world just feels so fragile. but ash got to visit the mecca of carnivorous plants so all is fundamentally okay….here is ash is ashsplaining to the woman who works in the wintergarden how pitcher plants works. he knows because we have books from the library:
he was disappointed the pitcher plants had no dead mice inside.
ash decided to take a drawing break on a bench on queens street. we waited.
here’s a good one from a few days ago on the south island….i went to wanaka and i bought a disco ball for $18 in a thrift shop and gave it to my new friend jane for her 3-year-old daughter wren because every three-year-old in this country needs a disco ball.
the thing that made me cry most was this old man in the wintergarden.
we had been in there for half an hour and ash was so high on life.
and the woman explaining plants to him was so kind and pateint.
and this sweet tattooed gay couple were sitting on the bench and holding each other and playing a card game.
and ash chased after a little girl to explain plants to her.
and i just stood there in the garden feeling totally raw.
and then this old man, probably in his eighties, walked by me, he was with some people and we kind of bumped into each other and he looked at me with his old, old, clear and blue watery eyes and he said, kind of shocked…”you are beautiful!” and i looked back at him and said “YOU are beautiful” and then neil walked over to see what was going on and the man said to neil, “she is beautiful!!!” and neil got teary
and then i started to openly weep and i grabbed the man’s arm and said
“i am sorry for weeping
it’s been a very emotional day”
and that was what happened in the wintergarden.
