Carnegie Hall, here we come: honoring Sinéad & Shane (tickets on sale tomorrow am)
Hello loves….Kia Ora….
Short story: tickets for our Sinéad/Shane tribute at Carnegie Hall on March 20th go on sale TOMORROW, Monday, January 22nd at 11 am ET.
…….
Greetings from the flurry down here in New Zealand. The kick-off show last night was fucking incredible and I’ll write more about it all soon.
Longer story, for y’all in the states/near New york City (or ready to finally take that trip to the Big Apple)….
I am super-blown-away-excited to announce that I’ll be joining a ton of incredible artists (omg look at the list) for a night at the iconic Carnegie Hall to honor Sinéad O’Connor and Shane MacGowan of the Pogues…two also-iconic Irish punk legends.
The one at City Winery went SO well that we are doing it all again at a bigger venue with even more AHHHHH.
I am personally weepy about this one, as it was a text from me to Shlomo at City Winery that kicked all of this off. I suggested, the night we lost here, that it would be an amazing idea to have a benefit for her at his venue, City Winery.
Because I texted Shlomo right after we lost Sinéad, he decided to put together that first little benefit at City Winery…and now we are taking the WHOLE show to goddamn Carnegie Hall.
Like….one little text to Carnegie Hall. Holy fuckballs. We win this one.
Sinéad O’Connor
The rest of the line-up includes David Gray, Glen Hansard, Cat Power, Dropkick Murphys, Lisa Hannigan, Billy Bragg, Gordon Gano (of Violent Femmes), The Mountain Goats, Bettye Lavette, Eugene Hütz (of Gogol Bordello), Julia Cumming, Kat Edmonson, and the Resistance Revival Chorus.
Shane MacGowan
I’m going to sing a song that I love and that will be very fucking meaningful….you can probably guess what it is :)…and I may do it with a very, very, very special guest.
………..
Here’s the whole press release about the event, with info about ticketing and all that:
[NEW YORK, NY] City Winery is proud to announce the partial lineup of performers for an extraordinary evening celebrating the life and work of two icons of music and freedom of speech: Sinéad O’Connor and Shane MacGowan. Scheduled for March 20, 2024, at Carnegie Hall, this special event brings together a stellar roster of artists to honor the profound impact of these legendary figures on music and culture. This year’s benefit concert supports PEN America, a leading organization committed to protecting open expression in the United States and around the globe.
This special tribute emerges from a poignant backdrop: the heartbreaking loss of two beloved Irish songwriters in the past year. City Winery holds a uniquely special connection with O’Connor, as it was one of the venues at which she chose to perform during her final two tours.
Inspired by the vision of Amanda Palmer, City Winery organized the “Remembering Sinéad O’Connor” tribute last October.
Tragically, the music world lost MacGowan nearly two months later. This spurred a new, heartfelt vision: a duo tribute to celebrate the indelible marks these longtime friends and collaborators left on music and cultural expression. Sinéad & Shane at Carnegie Hall is a singular, deeply meaningful celebration of their lives and artistry.
